The 4 Top Details You Need to Know About the PS5

The PlayStation 5 is real, and yes, there are details! While few details of the future system were revealed, the PS5 (name not yet confirmed) has the potential of being the most powerful system ever ... with a hint of world domination.

In a very technology speak interview with Mark Cerny, Lead System Architect of the PS4 and now Lead System Architect of the whatchamacallit, he revealed the features for the PS4's successor with Wired; Touching on topics such as PSVR support, 8K graphics, backward-compatibility, 3D audio, cross-gen game releases, super-powered SSDs, and much more. However, nothing was revealed yet on price, launch date, games, and the features that the system will offer.

Below is a breakdown of the top 4 features that you need to know about this all-powerful futuristic system, that I hope is out soon and is reasonably priced.

Cross-Generational Support and Backward-Compatibility

Backward-Compatibility was a feature that was touched on lightly in the interview with Cerny; however, it's an essential feature for those still wanting to play games on disc (me), and for people who have not dived into all the videogames that the PS4 has to offer, and currently as I’m writing this, there are 762 PS4 games available on the PlayStation Store.

Backward-Compatibility is not only a great feature, but it gives security to gamers that they can still play all the games they previously bought for their PS4, without worrying if they'll become obsolete. It builds trust and console loyalty.

Also, Cerny mentioned that there would be Cross-Generational Support for both systems, instead of focusing all its resources on the PS5 and ceasing development of new PS4 games.

Going Full SSD

There is only one thing that needs to be said: Cerny said that devkits have been going out for a while now, and he got to show off one of them to the Wired team. Referring to fast-travel times in the PS4 Spider-Man videogame, Wired reported, "When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. [...] What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact." Wow.

8k? And Specs!

Yes, the PS5 will support 8k because you know, why not. While 8k screens are currently anywhere from $5,000 to the total deposit of your entire bank account, the PS5 is working to be future proof and allow for the best possible experience on budget screens. It will include an "eight-core CPU based on AMD’s third-gen Ryzen line built on the chip company’s latest 7nm Zen 2 process and a custom GPU based on AMD’s Radeon Navi hardware," reported Wired.

PSVR Support

At this time Sony will not be discussing plans with virtual reality; however, Wired said, "the company confirmed that the existing PSVR headset will continue to work with the PlayStation 5."
